An independent atlas of sports data, visual judgment and reader understanding

About the independent atlas

The Editorial Method

Cloudyorchardscandi explains how complex match statistics become clear visual experiences—and where that translation can go wrong.

We write for analysts building a defensible account, editors shaping an explanation and commissioners judging whether an interface deserves to exist. The central subject is judgment, not software fashion.

A guide, not a portfolio

This is an independent informative website. It does not present client commissions, claim involvement in professional team analysis or offer a live match data service. The word “Studio” in our navigation refers to the editorial approach behind this publication.

References to organizations, tools and standards help readers locate definitions and methods. They do not imply endorsement, sponsorship or affiliation. Demonstration values and artwork are explicitly illustrative and should not be interpreted as evidence about an actual match.

Four decisions, in order

01

Frame

Define the reader's question and establish what the available records can answer.

02

Encode

Select a comparison, denominator and visual form that preserve the relevant relationships.

03

Interact

Add controls only when they support meaningful investigation beyond the default view.

04

Account

Keep source information, uncertainty and accessible alternatives attached to the claim.

How to use the atlas

Read the chapters in order when developing a new story. Visit the comparison demonstration when a denominator changes the apparent conclusion. Use the trust chapter before publication and the FAQ when a commissioning discussion needs a sharper distinction.

We favor plainly stated limitations over a false impression of certainty. Examples are deliberately small enough to inspect. The purpose is to make an editorial choice visible, not to simulate the scale of a production analytics platform.

Corrections and questions

If a definition, reference or explanation needs attention, identify the page and the specific passage. Include a public source where possible. Do not send confidential data or material you are not entitled to share.
